Language and Literacy Coach

The Language and Literacy Coach serves as an instructional leader in IAFC’s Early Learning programs, and is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing a comprehensive literacy program which facilitates learning; modeling of best practices lessons which use literacy-based learning strategies; coaching teachers in all curriculum areas on how to enhance students’ literacy skills; identifying staff development needs of the school; and for providing staff development related to literacy as part of the problem solving.  

The Language and Literacy Coach will be responsible for providing general coaching for their assigned classroom(s) along with emphasis on their content area and will serve as the agency’s subject matter expert in their content area.

This incumbent will be expected to promote and adhere to the workplace core capabilities of: accountability, customer focus, continuous quality improvement, communication, competent people and clear priorities.  All work to be completed with minimum supervision and in accordance with organizational standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following. The organization reserves the right to add to, delete, change or modify the essential duties and responsibilities at any time.

  • Develops, in consultation with teaching staff and supervisors, an annual coaching plan with each classroom team, including goals, support needs and next steps that lead to positive child outcomes.
  • Observes and provides feedback to teachers on instruction related to literacy development and content area knowledge.
  • Develops and supports program-wide language and literacy initiatives.
  • Reviews lesson plans, child assessments and child screening tools for quality and accuracy.  Supports classroom teams in any needed areas and ensures improvement.
  • Serves as the Early Learning language and literacy content leader.
  • Collaborates with the Internal Trainer to plan training opportunities focused on language and literacy.
  • Provides support to other coaches for challenges within the assigned content area.
  • Monitors School Readiness activities, TS GOLD and acquisition of instructional materials.
  • Assists with analysis and development of school curriculum, instruction, and assessments.
  • Plans, schedules, and conducts content meetings.
  • Supports teachers in analyzing language and literacy data to enhance instructional practices.
  • Creates a literacy environment conducive to effective instruction.
  • Evaluates literacy needs and collaborates with teachers and administrators to interpret, use assessment data to improve instruction, and problem solve.
  • Works collaboratively with the Education Manager to ensure the ongoing provision, compliance and best practices are implemented in classrooms.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Early Head Start/Head Start, PI, and PFA site operations, philosophy and goals.
  • Collaborates and communicate with site directors and owners to ensure that classrooms are implementing developmentally appropriate practice.
  • Participates in the development of program policies and ongoing monitoring of program quality.

  • Independently works on multiple tasks effectively in support of department.
  • Other Functions:  The organization may assign other functions to the job at its discretion

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following (The company reserves the right to add to, delete, change or modify the essential duties and responsibilities at any time).  Orients and trains the teaching staff.  Meets with teaching staff to review lesson plans and discuss performance.  Travels to conferences and trainings in and out of state.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development (CD), Early Childhood Education (ECE) or in a related field required.  Master’s Degree strongly preferred.  At least two years of Early Childhood classroom experience.  At least one year of supervisory and/or adult learning experience
