Media and Communications Manager

SUMMARY:

The Media and Communications Manager is responsible for fulfilling IAFC’s goals and objectives as it relates to the work of external relations.  This includes communications, media relations, social media, development and special events. All work to be completed with minimum supervision and in accordance with organization standards.

 

This incumbent will be expected to promote and adhere to the workplace core capabilities of: accountability, customer focus, continuous quality improvement (CQI), communication, competent people and clear priorities. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:.

  1. Media and Public Relations: Work with senior and executive management on media communications strategy and positioning.  Collaborate with management and external partners to generate publicity and media coverage.  Serve as initial contact for media inquiry calls.  Produce media releases and alerts, manage distribution, maintain media contact and up-to-date media list, pitch story concepts and track media coverage.  Create first drafts of communications for use.  Assist with coordination on media training for key staff, compile media coverage and copy/distribute regular reports to Vice President of External Relations.
  2. Internal Communications: Cultivate, compile, and distribute extensive, Daily News Briefing of stories in all forms of media (priont, television, radio, online, etc.) in all areas of interest (such as early care and education, state and city politics, poverty and income inequality, etc.) to Senior Management Team and other on a daily basis.
  3. Marketing and Communications: Assist Director of Marketing in proofreading and reviewing all agency collateral materials distributed externally to ensure consistency with agency mission.  Maintain external and internal inventory of communications promotional materials.  Participate in agency-wide committees and efforts to promote internal and external communications process improvement.
  4. Lead administrator (Admin) for Illinois Action for Children’s social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Storify, etc.) accounts. Develops strategies, drafts content (posts/Tweets/etc.), executes campaigns (both IAFC-specific and collaborative with allies), and generally amplifies the agencies brand through these channels on a daily basis.
  5. Special Events Execution: Provide logistical support for special events including mailing and response tracking.  Edit and proofread correspondence related to event and maintain event files and records.  Assist as needed to ensure success of donor-related special events.
  6. Act as managing editor of the employee Intranet which includes convening agency editorial team meetings, making story assignments and producing agency photography.   Provide editing and proofreading to biannual public policy newsletter.
  7. Contribute to Agency Early Child online newsletter which includes planning and writing feature articles, drafting CEO letter to readers and identifying agency-related story opportunities. 
  8. Project Management: As assigned, supervise outside vendors to fulfill project program needs for graphic design, printing, promotional materials, translation, mailing, displays and signage.  Direct seasonal interns on special projects.
  9. Responsible for assisting others by answering questions, providing direction when supervisor is not available.

  11. Other Functions: The organization may assign other functions to the job at its discretion.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree and one to two years related experience and/or training.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly the ability to compose letters and short reports as well as proofread lengthier documents.
  • Self-motivated; able to work independently; follow-up a must
  • Works well in team setting both at a management level and with peers
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to establish priorities.
  • Industry, integrity, and curiosity. The candidate must have an energy level that ensures high quality productivity on a timely basis, exercise good judgment and confidentiality when dealing with volunteers, donors, and staff, and exhibit patience and understanding of the needs of others.
  • Accuracy, independence, and reliability. The candidate must be able to perform effectively under the pressure of demanding deadlines and work with limited supervision/instruction, yet possess a team attitude and be willing and able to “pinch-hit” when necessary.
  • Ability to read Spanish (for proofreading).
  • Understanding of IAFC, its mission and strategic goals.
